10 Tips for Writing Your Resume

Before you even think about attending a job fair or picking out an interview outfit, you have to be sure you have a top-notch resume under your arm. Whether you're a recent grad just heading into the job market or an industry veteran on the hunt for something new, consider these 10 resume writing tips, and make sure your resume is up to par.

1. Pay Attention to Keywords

Scan through each job description that interests you, and tailor the keywords in your resume to match. This increases the chances of your resume getting a second look if the employer uses an applicant-tracking system.

2. Maximize Your Experiences

Even if you have very little work experience that relates to the position, mention any volunteer experiences or internship opportunities that contributed to your knowledge of the industry.

3. Include All Employment

Don't leave out past jobs because you think they're trivial or irrelevant. Even entry-level positions prepare any job seeker for a future career.

4. Brag About Your Accomplishments

Rather than just listing your previous duties, pepper your resume with examples of significant accomplishments you achieved, certifications you received or awards given for your performance.

5. Incorporate Quantifiable Data

Don't just list that you're an experienced salesman or a conscientious editor. Provide numbers and percentages to describe how you increased your department's sales by $1 million last year or maintained a 98 percent approval rating.

6. Mention Hobbies or Side Projects

If you have a hobby or side business that's directly related to the position but isn't your full-time gig, include it on your resume. This shows the hiring manager that you have a passion for the work and are serious about honing your skills.

7. Include Your Social Media Profiles

If you dedicate your social media profiles to your professional career, include URLs on your resume so the hiring manager can easily find your LinkedIn profile, Twitter account or Facebook page.

8. Maintain a Reasonable Length

Limit your resume to one page when applying for an entry-level or mid-range position. Those applying for senior-level positions can safely stretch the resume to two pages at the most.

9. Choose a Professional, Low-Key Format

Use a standard font for your resume, such as Times New Roman or Georgia, so an applicant-tracking system can easily read it. Choose a 12-point font, and make sure to align bullets and headings perfectly.

10. Get Creative

If you apply for a position in a creative industry such as advertising or Web design, do something different to set yourself apart from other candidates. Create a video resume to introduce yourself to potential employers and sell your skills.
