How To Be Happier At Work

No one is happy all the time and that’s totally okay! If you find yourself unhappy with your job for any reason and you’re not sure what to do next, here are 6 things to keep in mind to feel happier at work.

1. Address the issue itself
Understand why you’re unhappy. Is it the job itself? Is it the people you work with? Is it something completely unrelated to work? Knowing and addressing what it is making it hard for you at work is a critical first step.

2. Make a list of pros and cons
After addressing the issue, sit down and make a list of pros and cons. Determining what it is that you like and don't like will help you to more easily see what you value when it comes to work.

3. Build better relationships with your coworkers
Sometimes the people matter the most at your job. Dealing with an unpleasant coworker is a legitimate reason to not like your job, the whole idea that one bad apple spoils the bunch, is true. But having a friend or friends at work can go a long way and make work way more enjoyable, even fun!

4. Make the most of your time off
Your time not at work, is exactly that, your time, so make the most of it. When you get out of work, switch out of work mode, maybe you change into different clothes, turn off your email, and don't think about work until the next day. Making the most of your time off can mean something different for every person. If you’re able to separate work from your personal life and find time to do the things you enjoy, this balance will go a long way.

5. Develop your skills
This could be the key step in changing your situation. Perhaps with a different set of skills you can advance in your role, get promoted, or earn a higher salary. From there you can determine whether your job is something you want to do in the long term. Focus on where you want your future to be. Developing your skills could help you land a better position at your current job or could lead you to landing your dream job.

6. Seek out other job opportunities
Do not leave your current job, until you have a new job lined up. Search for positions online, through friends, on social media, etc. on your own time while still working at your current job. While looking for a new job, be on the lookout for an opportunity that will help you grow and improve your mood.

It's challenging to deal with a job that doesn’t make you happy, but it’s okay to make a change, if that’s what’s going to spark joy
